Economic Activities of Cooperatives

Agriculture Sector
Myanmar economy is based on agriculture. In fiscal year 2005-2006, to develop the agriculture sector, 14470 agricultural cooperative societies have been producing various kinds of crops such as paddy, groundnut, sesame, pulses and beans. The total sown acreage is 15 acres in lakh and total output value is 116611 kyats in million.

Livestock and Fishery Sector
Livestock and fishery cooperative societies are formed to fulfill the needs of domestic market as well as export promotion. A total of 1255 livestock and fishery cooperative societies have been formed and the total production value for fiscal year 2005-2006 is 10185 million kyats. Anawardevi cooperative society and Sea Wolf cooperative society had set up cold storage plants and are exporting marine products to Singapore and Middle East.

Cooperative Industries
With a view to develop industrial activities of cooperatives and produce import substitute items, 804 Industrial cooperatives have been formed. They produce a variety of goods such as food and beverages, clothing, construction materials household goods and industrial raw materials valued 29320 million kyats in 2005-2006 fiscal year. The cooperative candy factory in Shwepyithar Industrial zone is currently producing assorted candies as import substitutes while Mandalay GEC sugar mill set up in 1999 can produce 7.4 tons of sugar per day.

Cooperative Health Care Services
Health care services are being carried out at 275 general clinics, 35 polyclinics, 3 hospitals and 16 indigenous health care clinics.

Saving and Credit Cooperatives
A total of 1898 saving and credit cooperative societies have been formed with the aim to extend loan at low interest rate to the needy members.
Cooperative Bank has been formed for cooperative banking activities.

Women Development Cooperatives
Women Development Cooperative are formed to improve their living standards and generate income for the members. The societies provide technical training assistance such as knitting, sewing and other handiwork to women. Children day care centres are opened by women cooperatives.
