Cooperative
Rural Development Services
Water supply for rural areas is carried out in 73 townships by
283 societies with 285 artesian wells. Cooperatives have been
undertaking electric power supply in rural and remote areas. At
present, 166 societies in 126 townships are engaged in providing
electric power supply in 166 villages generating 10.2 lakh kilowatt.
The Myanmar Investors cooperative society is carrying out the
production of husk consuming gas engines that can be used with
generators.

Education and Training
With
the prospect of brining out qualified persons in business management,
accountancy, marketing and computers application, the ministry
of cooperatives has opened 4 colleges under it:-

Yangon Cooperative Degree College.
(b) Central Cooperative College ( Phaungyi )
(c) Mandalay Cooperative College.
(d) Sagaing Cooperative College.

Yangon
cooperative Degree College was affiliated with Yangon University
and has conferred B.A ( Business Science ) degree to its graduates.
The other 3 colleges award Diplomas after completion of two year
courses in various commercial subjects and the graduates can them
attend Yangon Cooperative Degree College, Economic Universities
as well as University of Distance Education for a Degree. Graduates
of Yangon Degree College who are qualified for master course can
attend the Yangon Economic University of M.Econ degree. Students
who wish to attend Cooperative Colleges can enroll in the respective
colleges or enquire at the Director General Office, Cooperative
Department.

Sector
Most
of the cooperative activities are Trading business. Trade practices
such as advance purchase, cash procurement and purchase by contract
have been adopted by cooperatives for many years. Commodities
were distributed by the cooperatives throughout the country.
The main exports of the cooperatives are agriculture products
(pulses and beans, maize and oil cake), marine products (fresh
and sea water fish, prawns), forest products (hardwood wooden
ware, rattan and rattan products, rubber, honey) and handicraft
(tapestry, puppets, lacquer ware, wood carving and musical instruments).
Myanmar Arts and Handicraft Centre ( MAHC ) has been opened at
Cooperative Commercial Centre ( Saya San Plaza) at the corner
of Saya San Road and New University Avenue. Souvenirs and handicrafts
can be purchased at MAHC. MAHC shops registered at the Ministry
of Cooperatives to use cash memo have the privilege of export
permit exemption.
