Brief history of the Ministry
The Ministry of Cooperatives was first formed as the Ministry of State Cooperative and Commodity Distribution on 5th April, 1951. On 26th March, 1962, it was united with the Ministry of Civil Supply Services and was named as the Ministry of Civil Supply and Cooperatives. On 18th June 1965, it was established as a separate Ministry by the name of the Ministry of Cooperatives.

Organizational structure of the Ministry
Under the Ministry of Cooperatives, there are two Departments and one Enterprise; namely- the Cooperative Department, the Cottage Industries Department and Cooperative Export Import Enterprise. The organizational structure and main functions of the Ministry are as shown in the following chart-

Myanmar Cooperative Vision
Myanmar Cooperative Vision is to strive for the development of the National Economic and Social Affairs and to safeguard the Cooperative identity which promotes cooperative socio economic well being.

Myanmar Cooperative Mission

The Mission is to realize the following objectives-
- to abide by the Cooperative values, ethics and principles.
- to strive and apply modernized knowledge, technical knowhow and advanced technology in Cooperative societies.
- to participate in building up a modern and developed Nation by effective implementation of cooperative endeavour.

Responsibilities of the Ministry of Cooperatives

- to safeguard the constituents of the Cooperative Law.
- to enhance the development of cooperative within the country.
- to disseminate the awareness of cooperative spirit, principles and knowledge among the people.
- to cooperate with international organizations for the development of cooperative socio economic activities.
